Da Capo 2007

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

The NUS Wind Symphony (or ‘La Nus Symphony’ as the Italian emcee calls us) is proud to present Da Capo 2007, our annual concert series for our freshmen undergraduate members!

Da Capo, meaning ‘back to the beginning’, traces the roots of NUSWS back to the source of our membership: University freshmen!

So this concert, mainly for the freshies in NUSWS, is also for the freshies out there in all universities. And of course for everyone who’s interested!

We’ve got an exciting repertoire for your listening pleasure:

Conductor: Mr Leonard Tan

Date: 27 Oct 2007, Saturday
Venue: University Cultural Centre Hall (NUS)
Ticket price: $10 (early bird tickets at $8, limited!)

a bad day, and valuable feedback

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

ok, my day was terrible. simply terrible. i hope i can divulge in more information but i can’t. this is to protect the people involved.

anyway, a lack of proper meals totally wrecked my entire day. my fault in not having enough discipline to enforce my meals right on time; i was too preoccupied with the negative things that happened and also the rehearsal that i was about to take. NUSWS prac today went on well, things were cleared up, pieces efficiently rehearsed (can’t say the same for my bit), we know what to practise during sectionals. my rehearsal for Elisabeth went ok, and i received very valuable feedback from daniel and cloud. sorry, i’m gonna quote you guys!

daniel cleared up some doubts for his section and after some prompting, told me i could give the ensemble more information about the individual songs in the musical. i totally agree! and i’ve been neglecting the feelings of the musicians playing the piece, trying to make sense out of it all. agreed. will work on it. cloud said i shouldn’t stop so often. something i overlooked; continuity is important! ok man, that’s worth looking into, for higher levels of efficiency!

see, i have wonderful friends who give me really important feedback :D

they did compliment some things i did right, though, but i thought i shouldn’t boast about them on my blog. haha. after all, i need more negative stuff to know what i can do more positively. such irony! but i love the challenges i’m facing now :D

so, checklist: stop less, give more information, and speak much louder! i need a loudhailer man! or can someone please give me vocal lessons??

i welcome more feedback from anyone! i promise i will not take offense unless it’s some personal attack :P

come watch Da Capo 2007! information will be up in a jiffy! :D

Happy Teacher’s Day Continued!

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

haha. just as i thought that was it, the sec 2s from NCWO gave us 2 presents each! sharks, i was just joking when i said they "bo sim". never joke with your students about this kinda things…

anyway, the first present was relatively easy to guess. and relatively easy to unwrap too. a lovely rubber wristband-watch with a keyboard imprinted on it! and the letters ‘D L’ printed beside the keyboard. i wonder what ‘D L’ stands for!

the second one… after going through layers and layers of wrapping consisting of the proper wrapping paper and 12 layers of newspapers, i finally got to it! a gorgeous piece of work it is, having the words on the frame, "Teachers plant the seeds that grow forever". to top it all up, a really personalised message beautifully arranged, printed out and placed nicely in the frame. it reads:

亲爱的 Mr Ian Lum, 我们 know we are the NAUGHTY first batch you taught. HAHAS!
BUT we know u enjoyed teaching us 很多很多. HAHAS!!!
我们也 enjoy the funny and amusing times we had.
although is your 1st time teaching us. BUT 我们知道 we have been V. GOOD STUDENTS! XP
We will strive hard and will not 孤负你的期望的!!!!! We wish U 全部的棒 in ur future teaching.
** time for mushy talking
on this 特别的 day, we will like to say 3 words to U ><
高兴 TEACHER 天!! (IS 3 WORDS NOT 5)
HMMM wad were you thinking huh?? ><hahas joking
WE 爱 YOU!!! 你很爱我们的!! ︿︿
