finally…

NTUSB concert is finally over! Reel In was quite a success, although the sound wasn’t as good as before according to nick. i kind of agree; NTUSB did sound better in their last concert. but this time they injected into their pieces a very important aspect of music: expression. the feel this time round is much better, as even the audience could feel our feel. well, it’s over now, and i’m glad. because this also marks the end of busy days burning lots of evenings for band practices! now for InClarion, and i’ll be able to concentrate fully on NUSWS and Mus’Art, while getting the most out of tutoring sessions with mr tang xiao ping.

i thank all who turned up for the concert! one whole bunch of NCWO people turned up despite last minute notification, and my ticket sales grew ten-fold. haha. well ok, from 1 to 10. haha. thank you all for coming, and hope that you guys and girls have really enjoyed what NTUSB presented to you! i’m sure most of you have found the repertoire encouraging. let’s have that standard in mind when we strive for our concert in december!

got handed the Eb clarinet today! i’ve been wanting to give the Eb clarinet a shot, but haven’t got the chance. today i tried it at the expense of desmond, which for that i am still a little guilty, despite desmond assuring me that it’s ok with him. hey desmond, i just want you to know that i really appreciate the opportunity, and i will work hard. you have really done lots for me, whether you noticed it or not, and i’m extremely greatful and thankful for all your help! from going up to 1st clarinet to borrowing your precious barrel to now borrowing the Eb clarinet, without you, none of these would’ve been possible! thank you for having faith in me :D

i must work hard. i have loads to improve on! and i must learn more from mr tang xiao ping, be a good player! now that i have so much resources, there really isn’t any reason for me to not attaining the standard i want to attain! i’m really glad that while walking this path of music, i have my dear friends and dearest sweetie giving me their support :D

time to save hard too! i’d love to be part of the family going to japan for musical exchange next year! i’m so excited about it! must save up for it, and hopefully i’ll come back with loads of great stuff. kimchi!!!! erm, that’s korean. hmmm… sushi!!!! wahaha :P

busy life needs getting used to

Saturday, August 19th, 2006

ok, before i do any updates, due to popular demand, i hereby apologise to venessa for spelling her name wrongly and melvyn for getting his name wrong! haha. informal one lah, don’t mind. still, thanks for coming :D

one week of school gone in a flash! this semester’s modules are going to be rather interesting, given the wide scope of study i’m doing this semester. 2 modules dealing with speech, 1 dealing with literature, 1 dealing with movies (yay!) and 1 dealing with another language (german of course). schedule this semester is also relatively easier on me, since i’m only taking one band (i’ve been saying this too much) and i only have 1 tutorial to attend. mondays are movie days; sit in LT11, listen to some lecture and then watch a movie. how shiok can that be man! tuesdays are killer days, lessons from 1000 to 1900. german lecture, literary stylistics seminar and then critical discourse analysis seminar. wednesdays free, thursdays 3 hours worth of german, and finally fridays with 3 hours of semantics and pragmatics in the morning. yup, there goes my academic schedule in a nutshell.

this week i experienced a whole week of inconsistency in my playing. 1 day it was good, another day it was really bad. i guess it really makes a big difference how i’m feeling when i’m playing. and also food or the lack of it makes a huge difference in whether i’d have enough air support or not. strange but true for me! irritating, though. i don’t like this inconsistency.

did some musical shopping and i finally got a few essential items. i finally bought those zonda reeds after being luckless for a few days, and i finally bought cleaning paper for my clarinet pads. bought more durable mouthpiece patches, a cleaning swab for sweetie and a good tuner for myself. yes, i finally bought that tuner i’ve been wanting to buy since god knows when. will have to settle payment of my mouthpiece soon; don’t want stanley to wait forever for my money. and the buffet chadash barrel has finally arrived at band world! but i’m still a little stuck between buffet chadash and DEG acubore. but i suppose buffet chadash is better for me? too bad they don’t have a 67mm barrel. hope it comes with tuning rings!

had a really crazy ktv session with weiqiang, gerald and westin. they all can sing well man! we were yelling out some songs, destroying some songs, terrorising our neighbours with our constant attempts to reach the female voice range. haha. i yelled out my bunch of SHIN songs and pulled off the jacky cheung rap. very fun! and of course, dinner was heavenly. we ate at this place called Botak Jones (they have a website), the western food is heavenly. and we ordered this huge burger called ‘you’re nuts’ which is basically 2 burger bun halves and 3 gigantic beef patties drenched, and i really mean drenched, in cheese. sinful man! but obviously, i can afford it (my weight, that is). haha. don’t be envious :P

date with sweetie tmr! ok it’s past 12 midnight so it’s technically today. hope i have time for a haircut! better go sleep real soon.

i look forward to the crazy week ahead. 6 band practices and 1 concert. woohoo! all evenings burnt! OMG…

beautiful sunday :D

Sunday, August 13th, 2006

no doubt it’s a beautiful sunday, because it was a surprisingly good performance, given the little time we had to prepare our pieces. Phantom of the Opera sounded so much better than what i had expected, although we could have worked out the dynamics even further to achieve the desired effect. but we’re thankful that there were no major screw-ups and the performance really went smoothly. and i finally got my solo part right without squeaking. haha.

many thanks to my friends and students/ex-students who have come to watch this performance: boon hui, my long lost GESSBand clarinet SL; su juen, my friend from PRSS band; victor, zheng an, gina, belinda, vanessa, yue an and eric from NCWO (i hope i got all your names right!); and my mom and grandma who has been very supportive of my music! i hope i didn’t leave anyone out! thank you NCWO peeps for the lovely flowers for me and my gf! oh yah, and i’m so sorry i forgot to take a photo with all of you NCWO people, i wanted a photo of you guys as keepsake. oh well. i shall be less forgetful next time!

although the day was marred by some unfortunate misunderstanding, it was cleared soon enough and the rest of the day was really great! i really really enjoyed myself all the way from just before the concert to just before i got on that violent bus 63 home. haha. but it was really a fun day spent with sweetie and i guess we really enjoyed ourselves thoroughly!

about 4 more concerts to go before i finally slow down! this is really scary… NTUSB concert on 26th August, InClarion Clarinet Choir as guest performers on 2nd September, Mus’Art Wind Orchestra at the botanical gardens on 9th September, and finally NUSWS concert on 7th October. and finally a breather for exams! oh wow.

GERMAN!!!!

fireworks blues

Wednesday, August 9th, 2006

i’m sure many people jamming up the whole place at esplanade riverfront will be cursing and swearing as the fireworks appeared from BEHIND the marina square building. luckily huili and i got a good spot at the merlion; although the view was still partially obstructed, we managed to see most of the fireworks! the sides of the display were cut off rudely by marina mandarin and another hotel, making a very nice ‘frame’ for our viewing ‘pleasure’. oh well, at least we weren’t like the poor souls standing all along the bridge and the esplanade riverfront! though the water spraying merlion combined forces with the east wind to give me a nice, cooling ’shower’.

and yesterday’s gonna be one of the last times we’re gonna take 36 from esplanade, sit the loop at the end of orchard, sit the loop at changi airport, and change to 15, which loops at parkway parade. 3 loops!!!! we were pretty groggy when we reached her stop. and i got a nasty sore eye apparently after some dirt fell into my eye, and i couldn’t remove my contact lens cos there wasn’t any place for me to put it.

but still, the day was good. especially after hearing huili’s sweet voice over the mic at ktv. ktv session with huili was definitely fun and unforgettable!

and how can i forget? happy national day! belated, that is. singapore’s 41 now. hope we can enjoy mrt rides more, without having to squeeze our way out of the train when we need to alight (mostly due to the impatient people trying to rush into the train… they don’t understand that if we don’t get out, they cannot get in). hope we can enjoy bus rides more, without having to ‘overhear’ what other people have to say, i mean announce (people sitting across a few seats yelling to each other), and without having to hear what songs people have on their mobile phones (when they blast thier mp3s on public transport). well, we love singapore despite these little things :D

and hope my sore eyes would be better so that i can attend practice tonight :S

crazy weekend is over

Sunday, August 6th, 2006

i’d probably type rubbish cos i’m dead beat, so please pardon me if i’m incoherent or if i accidentally offend anyone! of course i’d try my best to be very careful with what i type, but u’ll never know when u’re this tired. haha.

where shall i begin? NCWO investiture seems like the most appropriate place to start! it was pretty smooth sailing as far as the event and the organising committee is concerned. i must say it’s a job very well done, given that there wasn’t much time for them to prepare anything substantial. and a big round of applause for yanting for the very well done videos! well, efforts paid off, and it was a great investiture, i have to say! well done, organisers!

and it was pretty heart warming to see that after 7 months of training, the recruits have finally graduated into privates, and most of them will be understudies for an assisting position in the band council. in these few weeks leading to the investiture, i see many of them putting in effort to do their theory properly, to pass their practical tests and to give proper footdrill. it was pretty heart warming to see many capable members taking over leadership positions in the council, and i must say, i have lots of confidence in these new leaders! from mixed reception in january, to general welcome by the investiture, it was no easy feat, i assure you guys.

investiture was smooth sailing except for the performance segments! due to the lack of proper practice time, and the irregularity of the players, both performances by the recruits and the seniors weren’t up to what we had expected. too many last minute additions to the original players! but well, we know we can do a better job. and we must.

to all my NCWO members who might be reading this, wherever you are, wherever you may go, don’t let the passion for music die. remember how we rocked the hall at our concert this year; relive those moments over and over again, always asking for a higher standard of performance. we will smell our gold medal as long as we have the heart to do what it takes to earn it!

alright, now for my non-NCWO related life. haha. almost like i have no life. after the celebrations at hougang plaza (a few rounds of pool with the NCWO people), i zipped over to jurong for the technical rehearsals. considering that i slept at 2am the previous night and had to wake up at 6am, i was already bushed, and the travelling from central to northeast, northeast to west had killed most of my brain cells. that being said, i realised i was the only 1st clarinetist there as mr chua had gone for NDP rehearsal. so there i was, trying to play at twice the volume while maintaining good pitch and a full tone, at half my normal energy. ok, i gave it my all, threw in all my focus, and i guess it didn’t turn out that bad!

after that (at almost 9pm), it was time to zip over to desmond’s chalet at downtown east! we went over to celebrate his nephew’s birthday, and to play many many rounds of UNO. haha. sweetie and i bought an eeyore for the cute little kid, and it seems that he liked it! oh, anyway, there were mountains of food to eat, and we ate, joked, played, watched tv for quite some time before knocking out flat on the bed. i didn’t manage to sleep much, considering i was sandwiched between two people, one of whom launched a series of subconscious attacks at me, causing me to lose sleep and some privacy. thanks to him i’ve got a stiff shoulder and aching back now! thank god i have the cow massager :D

in the morning, it was more breakfast at BK, and more UNO! and meiling was indeed very unlucky; she kept coming out last 2 games in a row, escape for one game, only to come out last another 2 games in a row! and while she cursed my cards it made her situation worse. haha. these UNO series reminds me of the time we played UNO in sweetie’s room at WMC. so fun! and if i didn’t remember wrongly, meiling was also the constant ‘loser’. oops.

after sending sweetie home from the chalet (she wasn’t feeling well, i thought i better send her since her parents aren’t fetching her), i concussed in a not so comfortable seat on my favourite bus home. after i was home, i realised i don’t have time to sleep, so i dumped my stuff in my room and checked my modules online before preparing for a short while and left my house for the performance. hectic! i was so zombified that i fell asleep on the bus to the performance location, oversleeping my stop by quite a few stops! when i finally reached there (i was late), i was almost totally zombified.

had to last through the entire performance nevertheless, and my lack of focus was quite apparent. but the performance went on quite ok, so i’m glad. in between our pieces, we had so much free time and that was rather irritating, actually. i was hoping that the performance would end much earlier (if we skip all the other items in between, the whole performance would be over by 8pm) so that i come home and replenish my sleep! in the end, everthing ended around 10pm. talk about efficiency.

ok, i’m really really bushed. thank god i finished the weekend ‘report’ here. haha. thank god i’ll be less busy next week!

back where i belong :D

Thursday, August 3rd, 2006

it really feels so good to be back playing at NUSWS again! a very different feeling, though, from the last time i took a huge break (of an entire semester that time). i feel so much more refreshed and ready to go, even though i’ve been playing all week and my lips were slightly sore. nevertheless, i enjoyed sight-reading the 4 pieces we’re going to play for concert, and i must say that they are very well chosen! mr leonard tan is really good at choosing pieces.

quite tough to sight-read. but i managed to play them through and run 2 solos. haha. but the solos are meant for the freshies so i guess it’s next time for me!

busy weekend ahead! teaching NCWO tmr to prepare them for the mini performance on their investiture. and not forgetting letting the members who haven’t passed their theory tests retake for the last time. saturday will be their investiture, and it’ll be a long long day, cos there’ll be investiture in the morning, some celebration somewhere following the investiture in the afternoon, sound check at jurong for the national day dinner, and finally to desmond’s chalet at downtown east. wow. then i’ll stay over till sunday, slack around and prepare for the performance in the evening!

busy busy weekend. but i forecast a very happy weekend :D

theory, practical, footdrill horrors

Wednesday, August 2nd, 2006

ok, the final lap for many NCWO members. your promotion and your getting the well-made certificate depends on this final practice on friday. i know some of you only need to pass 1 or 2 more segments, and you’ll be in the safe zone. do your best! and let me pass you by giving me a good attempt. it’d be such a pity if you don’t make it by friday!

i’m quite impressed with some of the recruits’ improvements. from the practical testing, i know that they have been putting in effort to play properly and i have to say that the trumpets have really improved a lot. pitching is so much more stable than before, but volume still needs work, as most of my recruits cannot project their sounds! what a pity. i see many players with potential. but i shouldn’t be discouraged at this point because i’m sure we’ll have time to make it work!

2 pieces to conduct on saturday’s investiture. hope all goes well! i better have a good rehearsal with them on friday. so many things to do!

was really really zombified after NTUSB practice today! even though i only managed to turn up in the middle of their practice, i guess i gave the remainder of the practice the remainder of my focus and energy. was totally worn out after playing pirates of the carribean! how to sight read when your mind is already half dead? haha. i have no idea how i got through the practice.

InClarion Clarinet Choir is invited to perform at the Esplanade Concert Hall? wow… cool! one more Esplanade performance for me. but i wonder what pieces are in store for us… and who’s gonna conduct the clarinet choir… 2nd september… i think i can cope with about 4 tuesday evening practices! on top of NUSWS on thursdays, NTUSB on mondays, wednesdays and saturdays, and MWO on sundays. what a ‘band’-it life!

i shall remember to bring a good jacket to band practices… Mr Oura must be an eskimo; don’t understand how he can still perspire in that freezing NTUSB bandroom…
